Seed-lot quantity worksheet
Translate a specified pure-live-seed quantity into a bulk quantity using the stated purity and germination basis.
Calculation basis
Target PLS kg = area ÷ 10,000 × specified kg/ha. PLS fraction = purity fraction × germination fraction. Bulk kg = target PLS kg ÷ PLS fraction.
This simplified basis uses germination only. A specification may treat hard or dormant seed differently. Mixtures, label components, test dates, seed rules and the authorized application rate must be reviewed separately. The result does not authorize increasing a bulk-weight field rate.
Match the specification and the lot analysis
Use this worksheet only when the specified quantity is expressed on the simplified pure-live-seed basis used here. The model multiplies purity by germination and converts the specified kg/ha target to the entered area. Both percentages must describe the relevant lot and a compatible basis.
For an illustrative 1,000m² area at a specified 100kg PLS/ha, the target is 10kg PLS. At 98% purity and 80% germination, the calculated fraction is 0.784 and the bulk quantity is approximately 12.7551kg. Those numbers demonstrate the formula; they are not recommended species, rates or label values.
Do not silently alter the biology basis
Hard seed, dormancy, different viability measures and mixture components can require a different interpretation. The worksheet deliberately does not add a hard-seed percentage or treat a mixed product as one uniformly tested species. Ask the responsible specification reviewer to define the correct basis before converting a purchase or application quantity.
Keep the commercial and field quantities distinct
A bag quantity, purchase allowance and authorized field rate can be different records. This calculation does not permit a higher bulk-weight application rate where a different rate has been specified. It also does not establish that a lot meets Canadian labelling or quality requirements.
Carry the lot information beside the result
Retain the label, lot identifier, analysis date and the specification source. The handoff includes every entered value and the germination-only limitation. Add those documents and any unresolved mixture or dormancy question to the enquiry notes so another person can review the conversion rather than seeing only a final kilogram figure.
