Water-volume planning worksheet

Convert an entered depth over a measured area into a volume and a supply-time scenario.

Calculation basis

Net litres = area in m² × depth in mm. Gross supply litres = net litres ÷ efficiency fraction. Supply minutes = gross litres ÷ flow in L/min.

No watering depth or frequency is recommended here. Use a site-specific care plan and current water restrictions. Flow can vary; supply time is not a safe continuous-pumping duration or a well-yield assessment. Number of events must be a whole number.

Enter a depth selected for the actual care plan

This worksheet supplies no watering recommendation. First resolve the appropriate plants, growth stage, soil, restrictions and care instructions with the relevant sources. The arithmetic then helps compare a chosen net depth with the water provision and outlet flow available for a planning scenario.

One millimetre over one square metre is one litre. An illustrative 5mm over 200m² therefore represents 1,000L reaching the intended area. At an entered 80% delivery efficiency, the corresponding supply scenario is 1,250L. The efficiency is an assumption you supply; the worksheet does not measure it.

Flow and coverage answer different questions

At an illustrative 25L/min, 1,250L requires 50 minutes of supply. That does not mean every part of a yard should receive water continuously for 50 minutes. Sprinkler coverage, cycling, infiltration, runoff and operating limitations must be resolved in the actual care arrangement.

Keep water-source assessment separate

A quoted outlet flow may vary with other use, pressure, hose configuration and the source itself. A well or cistern needs an appropriate supply assessment; this model does not establish sustainable yield, safe pumping duration, water quality or permission to use the supply. Municipal restrictions can also change.

Record the basis for each planned event

The model multiplies the entered gross volume by the number of events. It does not recommend those events or adjust them for rain. Keep a care log, check actual ground conditions and revise the arrangement as required. The handoff preserves the depth, efficiency, flow and event assumptions so the volume is not mistaken for a prescription.
