Paper, wood and blended hydraulic mulches: build a useful comparison
Compare hydraulic mulch products by specification, composition, equipment compatibility and application requirements instead of colour or category alone.
Read the chapter ↗National field manual
Compare materials by their documented composition, application requirements, compatibility and role in the specified treatment.
Paper fibre, wood fibre, blends, tackifiers and reinforced matrices describe different parts of the hydraulic application market. A category name cannot establish an application rate, allowable weather, machine compatibility or expected performance on a particular slope. Obtain the current product information for the actual system proposed and identify what the designer or owner has specified.
Keep seed establishment and erosion-control obligations visible as separate requirements. A product selected to help protect a seedbed does not independently resolve drainage, concentrated flow, slope stability or the suitability of the plant community. Where those risks are present, the material decision belongs inside the broader site design.
A delivery ticket proves that material arrived. A batch record connects material to a defined treatment area. A field observation describes what was visible afterwards. None replaces the others. The visible colour of a sprayed area may help an operator follow placement, but it does not establish the dry mass applied, the seed quantity or uniform coverage beneath the surface appearance.
Make substitutions explicit before loading. Two products described with similar marketing language can have different instructions or system requirements. A documented substitution review should identify the changed product, the relevant requirements and who is authorized to resolve the change.
Caltrans erosion-control material is useful for understanding how hydraulic mulch systems sit within inspection and stabilization work. Its requirements apply in their own jurisdiction and contract context. Use the applicable Canadian project documents and local authority requirements for the actual site. The chapters below explain how to read and record the material evidence without turning a generic category into an unsupported performance promise.
The organizing question: What does this product system require, and what evidence supports its use here?
